We'd love to include as many people as possible, and hope to have at least one person from each coop. Please bring a vegetarian or vegan dish to share (vegan preferred). If you need vegan cooking suggestions, feel free to contact Leah or Eowyn at 617 718-9285. 2) Get excited! Start thinking about what your coop needs to be stronger, more sustainable, more fun. Ponder your own skills, and those of other people you live with, and how you could use these skills to contribute to the growth and development of other coops. Start dreaming about a cooperative revolution, and how we might contribute to the cooperative movement in Boston and other places. To help with this process our fabulous community coordinator, Naomi Tor, will be crating a list of questions to inspire creativity and discussion. She will be in email and phone contact with your coop over the next few weeks. 3) Consider designating a primary contact person for Naomi so she can stay in good contact with your coop. 4) Forward this announcement to other coops in the Boston area, and send their contact info to Naomi. I'm looking for a place to live in a co-operative or collective housing arrangement in the Boston area (accessible by public transportation) beginning on January 1st, for about six months (possibly up to a year). I see co-operative living as a chance to create a positive environment which can be a path to creating a better world. I've been eating in a dining co-operative at Oberlin College for the last three semesters, where I've been actively involved as a breadmaker and a missed-jobs-coordinator. We almost moved in, but unfortunately the owners decided they weren't ready to move out yet. Now it turns out they are moving and are potentially interested in leasing to a co-op group, for a longer-term lease (a couple of years or more). The house is quite large, and could fit anywhere between 6-12 people, depending on how many couples, etc.. It's immediately adjacent to the arboretum and the Roslindale commuter rail stop. Our negotiations on rent spanned quite a wide range, ($3000-$4500/month) so you would have to figure out what they were looking for now. In any case, if any existing or newly forming co-op group is interested, they are quite interested in renting to a community. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative has funds generated from electricity ratepayers and set aside to promote renewable energy. In turn they have awarded grants to several local groups around the state for the "Solar to Market Initiative," which will pay part of the cost of installing a solar PV system for selected households or businesses in certain towns. With this money, plus tax breaks and other incentives they expect to reduce the cost of installation by about half! However I am still confounded by four different co-ops. Even though I know they exist I have not yet talked to and have no way to reach: Spirit of 76 Dudley co-op There are also two I am unsure about their very existence one is listed as Macro House and the other is simply named Allston co-op. I have called and left messages at both but with no reply so unless someone tells me otherwise I am about to assume that they either arent co-ops or dont want to participate right now and take them off the master list. So far we have collected info on 23 different co-ops, talked to three more, heard of two others, and suspect the existence of a further 2 making a grand total of 29 co-ops with a membership of well over 250 people including around 100 in student co-ops. The address is 3 Sacramento St. in Cambridge. Since it's a student coop, the turnover is relatively high. I suppose a good contact phone number there might be the phone of the resident advisor; I don't think the coop has a 'house' phone number. I will try to find it out. What the heck does 'Boycott World Bank Bonds' mean? As publicized by the mass mobilizations by the Global Justice movement, the policies of the World Bank create poverty throughout the world. They force impoverished countries to prioritize debt repayment over human need, taking money away from health, education, and clean water. In Africa, decades of World Bank lending have harmed public health systems and exacerbated the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Meanwhile, the Bank makes it easier for companies to fire workers and to change their labor laws, weakening the collective power of workers. The examples go on. But the Bank has a weak spot. It gets 80% of all of its funding from bonds, which are sold to universities, pension funds, cities, and so on. Over the past few years, organizers around the world have launched a campaign to boycott those bonds. Last Spring, Cambridge became the seventh city in the country to boycott World Bank bonds--and the first in the Northeast. Bankbusters, a local Global Justice group, is working to pass a boycott in Somerville as well. In support of that campaign, Millstone Coop will host a house party on January 30th. This party is the place for you to learn more about the World Bank and how to get involved in the boycott campaign. We'll be watching a movie on the issue and hearing from a speaker from Bankbusters on this campaign against the World Bank. Of course, there will be good food, good people, and a great time. So please, come out! Please RSVP to Millstone at 617-718-9285 or millstone@bostoncoop.net I hope to see you soon, and feel free to circulate this, especially to other Somerville residents. $500 - WOMAN TO JOIN A GREAT COOP HOUSE Warm Fireplace and Big Garden

The house has been a COOPERATIVE group house for over 15 years and often housemates stay for years. There is a commitment to have the place feel like everybody's home. The roommate selection process is careful, seeking mutual compatibility and shared goals for a healthy living situation.

We're looking for an emotionally intelligent and mature person to join our coop immediately. Our most successful housemates have been creative, politically conscious, tolerant, flexible, humorous and loving.

We are 3 adults (29+) and a teen girl. We share as much as we can: cooperative food, chores, decisions, playing, dancing, alternative thinking, eating some meals together. We are currently a combination of light meat eaters and vegetarians.

The available personal space is a single room for $500. The space is in good condition, nice paint, good light, a big closet and more. The common space is also nice: clean, open, sunny, new kitchen, a garden, fireplace, deck, washer/dryer, basement hot tub, workshop, guestroom...

How does the house feel? We think of ourselves as supportive to each other without being fanatical about participation (there are no required dinners or weekly meetings, etc.). We do function somewhat as an extended family. The house is social with a healthy respect for privacy. We have a cat that only roams outside and on the third floor. No more pets, please and no cigarette smokers either.

What's happening in our part of town? A pottery studio and a gourmet restaurant just opened up around the corner. Last spring, we attended the open studios day of West Medford Artists Association, and a new international folk dance center is opening this spring.

If cooperative living is a conscious choice for you and you are interested in living with a teenager. Please get in touch.

certification, to Somerville to teach, and hopefully be near Chavurat Shalom, on College Avenue. I try to be environmentally friendly, wish to live near enough to the T not to have to own a car, hope to adopt one to two children within the next 5-15 years (so will need a community friendly to this idea), and wish to contribute to a consensus-based positive-action oriented community. My current schedule limits me to visiting during school breaks, or possibly Friday nights, if sleep-over space is available, but I am hoping to also begin becoming acquainted with like-minded people and groups via email or writing, if that is also possible. My apologies for long-windedness, thanks, Shira Destinie Jones __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. We are activists who believe the struggle for global justice begins in our local neighborhoods and that spiritual growth is an essential component of social change. We try to incorporate these ideas into communal living. Our household is a TV, smoke, and drug-free environment. We are a queer-friendly house. We have collective vegetarian/vegan meals several nights a week, cook and communally purchase organic food. We enjoy making music and other arts and crafts. Although we love cats, unfortunately our dogs cannot coexist with them. Rent should be approximately $500 for a small room, plus food and utilities (total under $700). We have a nice, large, sunny space, with several common rooms. We also have a high speed networked Internet connection and communal computers and printers. Room is available late February (possibility to start later, if you want). Our process for selecting new members may take a few weeks, although we will try to do it as efficiently as possible.
